The 40th Tank Division was severely crippled during intense fighting. With only nine remaining operational tanks, the Soviets prepared to use delaying actions to cover the army's withdrawal as the German advance surged deeper into Soviet territory. The remnants of the 40th deployed to engage the 13th Panzer Division which was heading up the road from Blinov to Rovno.
